****************************************************** The readings for the 5th Sunday of Easter give us a glimpse of the everyday life of disciples after and well after Jesus’s Resurrection. In our first reading from Acts, we are alerted to a problem that arose between different ways of following what Jesus said and asked disciples (and that includes us) to do. The problem was causing “hard feelings” and was solved by prayer then dividing but still providing full services based on the members’ talents/gifts.
The second reading from 1 Peter encourages believers to lean on Jesus, once rejected by authorities, but who is the solid cornerstone of our faith. We are exhorted to tell everyone the difference Jesus has made in our everyday lives, for it is Jesus who has called us out of darkness into the wonderful light of redemption.
The Gospel reading according to St. John tells of Jesus’s farewell to the apostles just before the Ascension. Even though Jesus has already breathed upon them the gift of the Spirit, they still do not understand his relationship with the Father, where Jesus is going or what Jesus is asking them (and us) to do.
We, as Christians, have a really hard act to follow… and doing things greater than Jesus, whew! One particular sentence from these readings (from the Catholic/Ecumenical edition of The Message) helped me tremendously even to attempt to understand how that might be accomplished. Jesus said: “The Father who resides in me crafts each word into a divine act.” My interpretation challenges me to strive to allow the Triune God within me to transform me (and everything about me) into the divine acts that God wants. That will require my complete and consistent attention to Divine Guidance, from beginning to end!
