****************************************************** The Scripture selections for the 2nd Sunday of Lent weave together a wonderful story. They tell of a true man of faith, an incredible Plan fashioned “before time began”, and a command to listen to “Jesus alone” in following it. How all of this connects to our lives today, in our complex and rather confused world, seems rather important!
In our first reading from the book of Genesis, the Lord initiates a new and surprising way for Abram to follow directions. From personal experience, I can say that leaving kinfolk and going to a new land was probably not what Abram had in mind. Also, from personal experience, the blessings promised, even though the hardships, define the awesomeness of our God and how our lives can be positively changed.
The reading from the first letter to Timothy reminds us that the power of God not only initiated the Plan but implements it rather than any works that we do. Destroying the power of death and granting immortality are well beyond our pay grade. Our debt was erased and those gifts were secured by our Savior, Christ Jesus. We fit into the Plan as God sees fit.
The Gospel reading about the Transfiguration always causes me to snicker a bit at myself and Peter. The well-meaning but foolish enthusiasm of Peter resides in the same person who denied Jesus and who was also chosen as an example to others of God’s mercy. How often we humans are just plain clueless and do so need to rely on the all-knowing, all-loving, and all-powerful One.
As Christians, we are blessed to know Jesus. We need to listen to “Jesus only”. Other people/religions honor Abraham as well as Moses and Elijah as we do, and do many things credited by the Lord as leading “a holy life”. We do not know the specifics of God’s Plan, but we do know that inclusivity, reconciliation, and forgiveness are part of it.
Perhaps thinking in the ways that Jesus embraced those three things while doing the Father’s will in his time will help us to get the fuller picture of why Jesus’s held the 3 disciples to secrecy until the Resurrection. (We know the entire story of Jesus that they didn’t know just yet. ) Encompassing those difficult parts of authentic Christianity will deepen our faith this Lent. It will also help us to reflect the goodness of our Triune God to others in ways that will be visible, understandable, and relevant. That is the Good News in action.
